Prince Philip caused a discussion when he was photographed not wearing a seatbelt while driving his Land Rover Freelancer recently. This happened only two days after the accident he was involved in. He remained unscathed, while the driver of the other vehicle suffered minor injuries. Those who pay attention concluded that members of the royal family often go without their seatbelts on, so we must wonder if they’re exempt from the low.

Members of the royal family aren’t exactly given a free pass when it comes to laws. The same rules apply to them and for ordinary people. However, there are some exceptions. The Queen is the only person who does not need the driving license to drive, nor she ever took the driving test. Despite being privileged in many ways, the Queen is careful to ensure that all of her activities are done in accordance with law.
As it is with almost every law, there are exceptions when it comes to wearing a seatbelt. It says that “a person involved in a procession organized by or on behalf of the Crown or which is commonly or customarily held.” Also, we should keep in mind that the royals are typically surrounded by police officers or personal protection officers when traveling on duty.

Additionally, all citizens are exempt if their vehicle does not have seat belts in the first place; this refers to classic cars, of which the royal family has many. The Queen owns Bentleys and Jaguars that are worth £10m upwards. She has also been noticed driving her classic cars around her private property in Windsor without a seatbelt before.
