The 1980s were a decade of huge royal weddings. First, it was Prince Charles and Princess Diana in 1984. Two years later, after being introduced by Lady Di, Prince Andrew and Sara Ferguson decided to tie the knot in the event that as watched by over 500 million people worldwide. At first, everything looked like a fairy tale. The Duke and Duchess of York, as were the new titles Queen bestowed upon them after the marriage, seemed very happy together. However, Price Andrew had to go away for his training the Royal Navy and Sarah was left to her own devices. She tried to fill the void by shopping, but even spending obscene amounts of money in exclusive London shops didn’t help. Eventually, she tried to find solace in the arms of another man.
In 1992, the marriage was destroyed when a topless picture of Duchess of York with another man – oil baron John Bryan – were published. They got officially divorced in 1996. Sarah lost her royal title but was given £3 million and £15,000 a year to support her.

Why have Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson remained close friends?
The former royal couple had two daughters, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie. They were quite young and needed both parents to be around, so Andrew and Sara remained fairly close and were spending a lot of time together, despite the scandal and the divorce. They lived together at the Royal Lodge and even attended social events together. Princess Eugenie once said in an interview that they were “the best divorced couple I know.”

By 2000, the couple seemed to have rekindled their love and rumors of them getting married again started to float around. However, Both Queen Elisabeth and Prince Phillipe had more than enough scandals and squashed the idea by forbidding it.
Despite the old wounds, they still live together. In 2015, they lived in Verbier, Switzerland., but moved back to Windsor Great Park in 2018. Sara issued a statement saying: “The Duke and Duchess remain, good friends, as they have been for many years, and nothing has changed.”
