Baby’s royal title
In the royal family, titles are essential. But according to King George V’s 1917 Letters Patent, only royals that have the chance of qualifying for prince or princess status are the monarch’s children and grandchildren, and those who are up on the line of succession. Baby Sussex will be seventh in line to the throne so he or she might not earn the ranking.
Meanwhile, the Queen made an exception for all three Prince William’s children, but that could have had something to do with them being third, fourth and fifth in the line, making baby Sussex seventh in the line, so we don’t know whether the Queen will make another exception.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle could decline the title
Even if the Queen decides to go forward with the title, the parents might not accept it. They want their child to have a normal life and even encourage a career outside royal family responsibilities.
Prince Harry and Meghan Marke wouldn’t be the first ones to opt out of a royal title. Princess Anne and her first husband Mark Phillips said no thanks to peerages for their children, Peter and Zara Phillips. They are the Queen’s grandchildren who join the family on special occasions but lead relatively normal lives. Peter works in a corporate and Zara is an Olympic equestrian.
Also, Prince Edward and his wife didn’t want their children to have titles His and Her Royal Highness tacked, so their kids have the status Lady Louise Windsor and James, Viscount Severn.
Title rules in royal family
Titles come from the family connection. That is why the monarch usually connects the royal title with the parents’ status. The baby will probably be Prince or Princess of Sussex, after the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.
His and Her Royal Highness status
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have a big decision to make. They could completely drop the title, or they could follow the footsteps of Prince Edward and Sophie, who only excluded His and Her Royal Highness part.
His or Her Royal Highness status applies to the full-time members of the family, monarch and monarch’s children and grandchildren.
Other royal titles
If the Queen decides to follow the rules and doesn’t make the baby a Prince or Princess, she has other options: A Lady, Lord, Viscount or other.
