Camilla Parker Bowles and Prince Charles got married in 2005, but things weren’t always good between her and the royal family. Camilla is known as the Duchess of Cornwall, rather than Camilla, Princess of Wales, which is the title that Princess Diana received when she and Prince Charles got married.

Diana, Princess of Wales
Camilla and Charles met long before he started dating Diana, but his family didn’t approve of her. However, he continued an affair with her even when he and Diana got married. That caused their divorce, and Diana died in an accident a year later.
The title ‘Princess of Wales’ referred to Diana
Although Charles and Diana weren’t married for life, the title ‘Princess of Wales’ became associated with her and she is still referred to as Princess Diana. During her life she earned respect in public. She had an excellent reputation, and millions of people admired her. So even though her marriage was far from perfect, the world wasn’t happy when Charles rekindled his romance with Camilla.
Camilla didn’t take the title due to the public disliking her
The fact is that Charles always wanted to be with Camilla and he should have done that from the beginning. When he and Diana officially separated, they continued their romance, but because of the accident in which Diana died a year later, they waited a long time to get married. Camilla took the title of Duchess of Cornwall because she didn’t want the public to hate her, and also because the royal family respects Diana.
Camilla set a precedent for future royals
Now that it has been nearly 15 years since Camilla and Charles got married, the public became a bit more fond of her. However, when she didn’t take the title of a Princess, she set a precedent for future royal women. We assume that it is the reason why Kate Middleton became Duchess of Cambridge rather than Princess Catherine when she and William got married. The same thing happened to Meghan Markle when she and Prince Harry got married. She got the title of Duchess of Sussex. This means that there probably won’t be any Princess titles for women who get married to royals.
